Osteopathy and Children Osteopathy is very gentle, calming and soothing, making it perfectly safe for babies and children. Birth is one of the most stressful event of our lives, and is very traumatic. The baby has to twist and squeeze through the mother’s bony pelvis, causing possible injuries through their soft skeleton. Babies are usually born with an unusually shaped head, but over a few days it is able to mould itself into a more normal shape. However, some babies who have been through a particularly traumatic birth may retain some abnormality in the skull. This results in the baby feeling very uncomfortable, and may experience symptoms including: - Irritability, crying, screaming - Colic - Sleep disturbances - Feeding problemsOsteopathy in the Cranial Field can be used to address this in order to release all the bones and joints within the skull, improve circulation through the head, and balance the nervous and lymphatic systems. If this is not addressed as the child grows, he or she may begin to experience problems such as: - Headaches, aches and pains - Clumsiness, and constant injuries - Learning difficulties and behavioural problems – there have been cases where children have been placed in a special needs school, with doctors and teachers losing hope, and after a course of Osteopathy have entered mainstream education and are performing very well. - Infections, including ear infections, colds and flus, gastro, etc. It is advised that newborns as young as 2 weeks old should have an Osteopathic assessment and treatment, so that these problems, and ones that may occur later on in life be prevented. The Effect of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field Reactions to treatment vary from child to child. Most of them will feel very relaxed and sleep well afterwards, but some may experience headaches and discomfort while the body slowly unwinds itself, which should settle within a few days. |
