Postural Problems

If you are standing, sitting in front of a computer, or performing repeated movements for many hours of the day, then it is important to have your posture assessed by an Osteopath. Alterations in your posture, even if minor can cause long term problems in the future like neck and back pain, and headaches.

Causes of alterations in posture:

  • Slouching at your desk.

  • Walking or standing with heels, bad shoes or flat feet.

  • Conditions, activity, or aging  for example, pregnancy, obesity, “beer belly”, muscle weakness of aging, osteoporosis, carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder, poor ergonomics or work conditions.

  • Trauma can disrupt spinal stability.

  • Genetics has a part to play in posture in conditions like scoliosis or an increased hump at the base of the neck (Dowager’s Hump).

Aches and pains are due to tension in the stabilizing ligaments and muscles. This may present as:

  • Neck and shoulder stiffness, pain or discomfort.

  • Headaches.

  • Low back pain.

  • Muscle fatigue or spasms in the back.

Osteopathic Treatment

Goals

Treatment is directed towards encouragement of optimal function of the body, and adaptation of the body to the existing posture so that it reduces discomfort.

Manual Treatment

Helps the soft tissues and joints of the musculoskeletal system to adjust to body stresses and return to normal. It helps prepare muscles, joints, ligaments, and supporting soft tissues to better accept positive changes.

Exercise Program

Including muscle strengthening and stretching can assist in maintaining the optimal posture, and prevent future relapses.

Self Help Tips

It is important to prevent slumping, awkward seated or standing position, and be aware of your posture at all times.

Note: Altered posture without management, even if mild, can cause serious back problems in the future that may take years to relieve, it is better to seek treatment earlier rather than later so that preventative measures can be taken, and the risk of back problems is minimised. Teenagers going through a growth spurt should get their posture checked regularly because it is constantly changing, and this is where postural problems usually begin.
